Tesla, Meta Platforms, Netflix and Procter & Gamble headline the busiest earnings stretch of the quarter this week, arriving just after the Nasdaq Composite posted its worst weekly drop since June.
The setup
Stocks sold off Friday as artificial intelligence and semiconductor names extended a losing streak and a jump in oil prices rattled traders heading into the weekend. The S&P 500 lost about 2 percent for the week, its fourth negative week in the last six.
The Nasdaq fell more than 4 percent over five sessions. The Cboe Volatility Index closed above 22 for the first time since June, and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF dropped roughly 10 percent for its worst week since April 2025.
Key numbers from the week
| Index | Friday close | Friday move | Weekly move |
| S&P 500 | 7,649.71 | -1.2 percent | -2 percent |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,128.13 | -2.1 percent | More than -4 percent |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,891.77 | -175 points | +0.7 percent |
| VanEck Semiconductor ETF | SMH | -3 percent | About -10 percent |
Beneath the index level, the market is narrow. The S&P 500 is up roughly 12 percent in 2026, yet the median component has climbed only about 6 percent, and around 185 stocks in the index are down for the year. Small caps slipped into correction territory on Wednesday.
The earnings calendar
About 70 S&P 500 companies report this week, with the heaviest days Tuesday through Thursday.
| Day | Headline reports |
| Tuesday, October 20 | Netflix, General Motors, 3M, RTX, GE Aerospace, Philip Morris International |
| Wednesday, October 21 | Tesla, Meta Platforms, IBM, Lam Research, Texas Instruments, AT&T, Abbott Laboratories |
| Thursday, October 22 | Procter & Gamble, Comcast, Blackstone, Lockheed Martin |
| Friday, October 23 | American Express, SLB |
The season has started strong. Of the 46 S&P 500 companies that have reported so far, 85 percent beat expectations, and blended earnings growth is tracking near 29 percent for the quarter, according to LSEG data.
Why breadth matters for the outlook
Bank of America calculates that excluding energy and technology, S&P 500 earnings growth slowed to roughly 7 percent in the third quarter from 12 percent in the second. The bull case for the rest of the season rests on the megacaps doing the heavy lifting again.
Goldman Sachs estimates that the five largest AI infrastructure spenders will push combined capital spending toward $1.2 trillion next year. Results from Tesla and Meta, plus guidance from Lam Research and Texas Instruments, will test whether that spending is turning into profit fast enough to satisfy investors.
Rates remain the swing factor
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh indicated at an IMF event that policymakers are expected to hold rates steady at their meeting late this month. Futures markets still price the possibility of two hikes by December following hot inflation data this week.
“Another strong earnings season should help equities withstand moderately higher rates,” analysts at UBS Global Wealth Management wrote. Hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones struck a more cautious note, warning that tech initial public offerings and a swelling fiscal deficit could make 2027 a difficult year for stocks.
What to watch
- Tesla’s margins and demand commentary, coming days after the company unveiled its long-delayed Roadster developed with SpaceX.
- Meta’s capital spending guidance and the first hard evidence on returns from AI infrastructure.
- Lam Research and Texas Instruments commentary on chip demand after the sector’s worst weekly drop in 18 months.
- Procter & Gamble’s pricing commentary as the cleanest read on the U.S. consumer.
Bottom line
The market has handed earnings the baton. Strong reports from Tesla, Meta and the chip complex could steady a wobbling rally, while disappointments would leave an expensive, narrow index exposed to rate pressure. For income-focused investors, the week is a reminder to anchor portfolios in companies with durable dividends rather than momentum.
