Meta Platforms delivered Q3 2026 earnings on October 21 that beat revenue expectations but showed the cost of its legal and artificial intelligence ambitions. Revenue rose 26 percent to $64.6 billion, while a $9.89 billion litigation settlement halved operating margins and record infrastructure spending pushed free cash flow below zero.
The setup
Meta reported $64.601 billion in revenue for the quarter ended September 30, ahead of the roughly $63.2 billion analysts expected. Advertising revenue grew 26 percent to $63.061 billion, with ad impressions up 10 percent and the average price per ad up 14 percent. Family daily active people reached 3.64 billion in September, up 3 percent year over year.
Net income surged 264 percent to $9.860 billion, or $3.83 per diluted share. The comparison is distorted by an 87 percent effective tax rate in the year-ago quarter; this quarter’s tax rate was 24 percent.

What to watch
The quarter’s profit was shaped by a $9.89 billion legal settlement expense tied to teen mental health litigation. Meta said operating profit would have been $22.880 billion without the charge, lifting earnings by $3.57 to roughly $7.40 per share.
Hours before the release, a New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion in penalties connected to the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, a ruling the company plans to appeal. The legal bill keeps growing alongside the capital budget.
Spending is the other pressure point. Third-quarter capital expenditures reached $34.910 billion, and Meta narrowed full-year capex guidance to a range of $135 billion to $145 billion, up from $130 billion to $145 billion earlier. Free cash flow turned negative at $2.120 billion, though the balance sheet still holds $82.4 billion in cash and marketable securities.
Reality Labs remains a drag. The segment posted $443 million in revenue and a $4.129 billion operating loss, slightly narrower than a year earlier. The Family of Apps business earned $17.117 billion in operating profit on $64.158 billion in revenue. Zuckerberg highlighted the launch of the company’s Muse AI products during the quarter.
Bottom line
For income investors, Meta returned about $1.4 billion in dividends during the quarter, a modest yield against a share price near $717. The stock briefly rose more than 4 percent after hours before settling up about 2.9 percent.
Watch whether fourth-quarter revenue lands inside the $73 billion to $76 billion guide and whether free cash flow recovers as capital spending peaks. The core advertising engine is still growing at double-digit rates, which is what funds the AI buildout and the legal payments.
