Nucor shares jump 5 percent as third quarter earnings more than double

Nucor shares rose 5.22 percent to close at $270.79 on Tuesday after the steelmaker reported third quarter earnings that more than doubled from a year earlier. The company earned $1.32 billion, or $5.80 per diluted share, as higher steel prices and growing shipments lifted results across its steel business.

What happened in the third quarter

Nucor reported results Monday for its fiscal third quarter, which ended October 3. Net earnings attributable to stockholders reached $1.32 billion, compared with $607 million in the third quarter of 2025. Diluted earnings per share came in at $5.80, more than double the $2.63 posted a year earlier.

Net sales climbed 32 percent year over year to $11.25 billion. EBITDA reached $2.28 billion. The average sales price per ton rose 9 percent from a year ago to $2,576, and steel mill shipments grew 12 percent to 7.23 million tons.

Trading volume hit 2.4 million shares Tuesday, well above the stock’s recent pace. The move put Nucor near the top of its 52-week range of $139.21 to $280.11.

Why steel demand keeps climbing

Chief Executive Officer Leon Topalian told CNBC on Tuesday that demand from data centers, pharmaceutical facilities and natural gas projects is driving the company’s earnings. Those end markets have turned steel from a commodity story into an infrastructure story this year.

“Supported by robust demand across key end markets, Nucor has generated approximately $2.7 billion of free cash flow and returned nearly $1.4 billion to shareholders through the first nine months of 2026,” Topalian said in the earnings release.

For the fourth quarter, Nucor expects stable earnings in its steel mills segment. Higher realized pricing should offset seasonally lower volumes and rising costs.

What the numbers mean for income investors

Nucor pays a quarterly dividend of $0.56 per share, or $2.24 annualized. At Tuesday’s closing price, the stock yields about 0.8 percent.

That yield alone will not attract income buyers. The stronger story is total capital return: the company sent nearly $1.4 billion back to shareholders in nine months through dividends and buybacks, roughly half of the $2.7 billion in free cash flow it produced.

Metric Q3 2026 Q3 2025 Change
Net sales $11.25 billion about $8.5 billion +32%
Net earnings $1.32 billion $607 million +117%
Diluted EPS $5.80 $2.63 +121%
Average price per ton $2,576 $2,358 +9%
Steel mill shipments 7.23 million tons 6.43 million tons +12%

Income per $100,000 invested

At $270.79 per share, a $100,000 position holds roughly 368 Nucor shares. That stake generates about $826 in annual dividend income at the current rate.

Buybacks do not appear in a yield calculation, but they shrink the share count and support earnings growth. For Nucor, that has been the bigger engine of shareholder return this year.

What to watch next

Three factors matter for the fourth quarter. First, pricing: Nucor expects higher realized prices to offset seasonal volume declines. Second, construction activity in data centers and energy infrastructure, the end markets behind this year’s demand. Third, the durability of margins, since input costs are rising alongside selling prices.

Bottom line

Nucor is running near full stride, and the market has noticed. Shares are up roughly 67 percent year to date, according to CNBC. Income investors buying today are not paying for yield. They are paying for cyclical strength, pricing power, and a buyback program that returns most of the company’s free cash flow.
